Compulsory Secondary Education

This educational stage, from 12 to 16 years, has an impact on study techniques and the development of competences. This process, in an intensive and specific way, occurs in two levels.

Consolidating learning, gaining autonomy and looking ahead

Secondary Education at Lizarra Ikastola supports students from ages 12 to 16 during a decisive stage in their personal and academic development. This is a period of consolidation in which prior learning is strengthened and students move towards greater autonomy, responsibility and reflective capacity, in line with the Model of the Person that guides our educational project.

Our aim is for adolescents to gain a better understanding of themselves, develop critical thinking and acquire the tools needed to face their academic and personal future with confidence.

Work habits and personal responsibility

In Secondary Education, special emphasis is placed on building strong work habits. Students learn to prepare and organise their materials, respect speaking turns, listen to and value others’ contributions, and express themselves clearly through presentations and oral explanations.

These habits create a respectful and demanding learning environment and help students progressively take responsibility for their own learning and their role within the group.

Study skills and academic preparation

Throughout the stage, study skills are developed in a progressive way, including concentration, time management, task planning, note-taking and different learning strategies. Internalising these tools enables students to respond more effectively to academic demands and to develop personal working methods.

This academic guidance ensures solid preparation for later stages, particularly for upper secondary education, providing students with confidence and security as they continue their educational journey.

Multilingual approach and communicative competence

Secondary Education reinforces the school’s commitment to multilingualism. Basque remains the core language of daily school life, while Spanish, English and French are progressively strengthened, developing broad and functional language competence.

Students learn to communicate accurately and confidently in different languages, both orally and in writing, understanding multilingualism as a valuable resource for academic, cultural and personal development.

Close guidance and personal development

Teachers provide close and continuous guidance, attending not only to academic progress but also to students’ emotional and personal development. Through tutoring and individual follow-up, needs are identified, decisions are guided and support is offered during this particularly significant life stage.

Attention is also given to coexistence, emotional awareness and commitment to the environment, reinforcing values such as responsibility, respect and solidarity.

Preparing for the next stage

Secondary Education at Lizarra Ikastola aims not only to transmit knowledge, but to prepare students to make decisions, organise their work and face new challenges with autonomy. By the end of the stage, students have a solid academic foundation and personal maturity to move on to upper secondary education or other educational pathways with confidence.

Se trabajan también la convivencia, la gestión emocional y el compromiso con el entorno, reforzando valores como la responsabilidad, la solidaridad y el respeto.

This educational stage focuses the work in two differentiated levels. The first one concentrates on the construction of habits from the preparation of materials, respect and order in the intervention of their classmates, expositions and presentations… The second level targets specific study-techniques such as concentration, organization, ways of study, notes… In this regard, the internalising of those skills will make our students to be competent in the different situations of life and their future as students.
