Part of a whole

Cooperative network

Lizarra Ikastola is part of a network composed of other Ikastolas with a common objective: offering an integral, quality education, taking into account the care and recognition of the Basque culture.

Lizarra Ikastola is part of the cooperative network of Ikastolas, a shared educational project that extends across the whole of the Basque Country and generates strong pedagogical, social and cultural synergies.

The Ikastola network is made up of 115 schools located in seven territories: Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, Lapurdi, Lower Navarre, Navarre and Zuberoa. Altogether, it brings together more than 46,000 families, 55,500 students and around 3,700 professionals, as well as many elements that cannot be measured in numbers: commitment, identity, community and shared purpose.

Ikastolas are diverse. Some are large, others small; some have a long history, others are newly established; some are rural, others urban. From the oldest, such as Pasaia-Lezo and Santo Tomas Lizeoa in Donostia, founded in 1961, to the newest Ikastola in Zumaia, opened in 2025. Different in size and context, but united by a common educational vision.

A cooperative educational project

Ikastolas are cooperative schools, created and sustained by people who share a common project. Families, teachers and non-teaching staff are actively involved in continuous improvement and in building a high-quality educational model with a strong social commitment.

This cooperative model is based on democratic participation, shared responsibility and the active involvement of the educational community. Education is understood as a collective task, built through collaboration and commitment.

Values that define us

Ikastolas are schools rooted in their local communities, secular, plural, inclusive and supportive. We are committed to an education that forms critical, responsible, participatory and socially engaged individuals.

We promote values such as equality, social justice, honesty, transparency, cooperation and social transformation, offering high-quality education with a public-service vocation.

Ikastolas are open schools, without filters or exclusions, where diversity is understood as a strength and participation as a core value.

Working as a network

Being part of the Ikastola network means actively working together. We share pedagogical projects, innovation processes, teacher training and common resources, allowing us to move forward collectively and respond more effectively to current educational challenges.

Close relationships with families, neighbourhoods and local communities strengthen this network and help build an engaged and participatory educational community.

A school for everyone, and for each individual

The cooperative Ikastola is dynamic, innovative and transformative. Its flexible structure allows it to adapt to a constantly changing society while remaining true to its principles.

This model brings to life a shared idea: a school for everyone, and at the same time, a school for each individual. A collective educational project that continues to grow through the strength of cooperation.
